Upper Moreland Primary School Envirothon
Just a little background information:
Second grade students will learn fundamentals of forestry, aquatics, soils, and natural resource management. We will have station areas where the students can rotate through each twenty minutes. The Envirothon celebrates our local environment and allows the children to first hand experience the world in which they live in. Throughout this day, students will develop an understanding of local environmental issues. By using stations, the second grade students will gain knowledge of and appreciation for the cause and effect relationships that exist among environmental factors. Our intent is to create environmentally aware students who contribute meaningfully to discussions and decisions that affect their generation and ones to follow.

Recycle Race

Gather students together and share some recycling facts:

Did You Know...

O Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water!

O Americans use more than 67 million tons of paper per year, or about 580 pounds per person.

O Paper products make up the largest part (approximately 40 percent) of our trash.

O Making recycled paper instead of new paper uses 64 percent less energy and uses 58 percent less water.

O Every day American businesses generate enough paper to circle the earth 20 times !

O Every day Americans recover more than 2 million pounds of paper! That's about 40 percent of the paper we use.

O One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year.

O Each year, Americans throw away 25 trillion Styrofoam cups.

O More than 1/3 of all fiber used to make paper comes from recycled paper.

O Every Sunday, Americans waste 90 percent of recyclable newspapers. This wastes 500,000 trees!

O A new landfill generally costs more than an old one that has filled up. This is because it typically costs more to comply with new environmental regulations, to buy the land, to construct the landfill and to transport waste because new landfills generally are farther away than older ones.

O Every year more than 900 million trees are cut down to provide raw materials for American paper and pulp mills.

O Only 1 percent of the world's water supply is usable; 97 percent is in the ocean and 2 percent is frozen.

Why Recycle - Five Good Reasons

    1. Recycling conserves our valuable natural resources.- Recycling saves energy.
    2. Recycling saves clean air and clean water.
    3. Recycling saves landfill space.
    4. Recycling can save money and create job

Recycling makes a difference.

  1. Split students into two teams- boys against the girls.
  2. Explain that we are going to have a recycle race by correctly recycling trash into the correct bins. Name the bins.
  3. Allow 3 students to come up from each team.
  4. Dump the bags of trash in front of each team and yell start.
  5. The winning team is the team that has separated the trash into the correct recycle bins in the shortest amount of time.
  6. Keep rotating teams.
  7. If you have time you may want to have a playoff between a winning boy’s team and girl’s team.
  8. Hand out wipes to each student.
